Hi, Jaz! Welcome and thank you for joining us to kick off Black History Month as our Naturalista of the Month!
Hey, girl hey! It is my pleasure to be here.
Let's get right to it! How long have you been on your natural hair journey and what inspired you to go natural?
While I've technically been natural for the majority of my life, I've been on this current natural journey for a consistent five years. What served as my inspiration was just curiosity. I was curious to see what my hair could do in its natural state, while being properly nurtured.
Were you practicing healthy hair care habits prior to going natural?
Absolutely, not. In the past, I applied a lot of heat, was over-processing with relaxers, improper color applications, DIY experiments. The works! After having my daughter is when I became more conscious about hair care. Knowing that I would be responsible for maintaining her hair health is when I started to take it more seriously. Now I have a better understanding of proper hair care and the importance of healthy hair habits.
Would you say that your hair has flourished since going natural?
Yes, it has. My hair has grown rapidly since big chopping in 2017 to now being past shoulder length in 2022. I also experience less shedding and a hydrated scalp.
Amazing. How would you classify your relationship with your hair?
It is a healthy relationship and that credit goes to my two stylists Ebony from Textured Press @texturedpress and Kamilah from @mshairandhumor
Thanks for sharing that info with us! Care to share some of your staple products?
Of course. My staples are Joico Moisture Shampoo or Joico K-PAK Shampoo depending on if my hair needs moisture or protein. Joico Moisture Conditioner or Macademia Deep Repair Hair Masque. Doux Mousse Def for styling. Textured Press Black Magic Oil for Scalp and Textured Press Rose Gold Oil for hair.
Any lasting words of advice, inspiration or wisdom?
"Stop being afraid to touch y'all hair!" That was a gem dropped by my stylist, Kamilah a few years ago. It was the best advice ever. Remember that your hair health starts from within. Take care of yourself and let your hair grow with you on your journey.
